William J. Rodgers was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, Feb. 18, 1865, and at the age of 16 started to learn the florist's trade in a greenhouse on a private estate in Ayrshire. When he was 24 years of age he came to Blair, where his brother, John, had been for four years.

His first job in this country was helping landscape the grounds at the A. P. Howes residence. Later he was emplayed in the C. C. Crowell greenhouse, where John Reid was also an employee. When the Crowell family left for California John Reid bought the greenhouse and started in the business at his home en west South street.
