The roots of the Christian Church
in Blair reach back over a hundred years to the arrival of a
pioneer family of "Christians only." Mr. and Mrs. Israel
Swihart arrived at the old town of De Soto May 5, 1855.
Much of the early history
Christian witness in this county centers in the lives of Mr.
and Mrs. Swihart. To this couple goes the distinction of
being the first known witness of the New Testament
Christianity in Washington County.
A number of folks entertained
meetings in their homes at De Soto that were conducted by C.
P. Evans and Israel Swihart in the winter of 1860-61.
Later in the year, Elder W. A. Denton held a meeting there and
organized a congregation of 11 members.
In February, 1861 David R. Dungan and wife came to Nebraska and located at De Soto and
ministered to this church for some time. This church was
host to the first area cooperative missionary endeavor in
Nebraska.
The church at Blair was
incorporated September 28, 1883. Late in the summer Dr.
Fawcett, Dr. J. P. Andrews and Z. T. Bruntan purchased a
building that was being moved. Dr. Andrews purchased a
lot on Lincoln St. and they moved the building onto it.
The building was remodeled and some additions were made in
1895. This served the congregation until August 5 1918
when it burned to the ground. The Presbyterian
folk offered their building as a temporary meeting house.
In 1920 the first unit of a new structure was started.
This served as a church home for many years. The men of the
church, under the leadership of Pastor Ralph Kersey started to
work on the upper story of the building. The new
dedication service was held the last Sunday in April 1955.
