Notes about the Maps

Beginning in the 1880s, Sanborn Insurance Maps, large-scale, detailed maps showing the size and placement of buildings in every city and town in the country, including Blair, were prepared every few years for use by fire insurance underwriters. These maps included information on materials used, the purpose of the structure, the number of stories, placement of windows and doors, and the location of lot lines, water pipes, hydrants and cisterns.

Today this information is invaluable in tracing the development of business districts and neighborhoods within a community. Maps currently available for Blair date from 1886 (2 maps), 1889 (4 maps), 1897 (4 maps), 1902 (5 maps), 1909 (7 maps) and 1923 (7 maps).

NOTES

Request to: Karen Aman, VP HunTel Systems

Members of the Blair Historic Preservation Alliance (BHPA) are requesting an evening tour of 2Blair Place, formerly known as the Huber Building and the Blair National Bank.

The purpose of the tour is to stimulate interest and excitement in our Blair Historic Properties Registry project.   (See Handout)

The schedule date is fixable at this point. Preferred dates are in March, either Tuesdays or Thursdays.

We would limited the group to 12 people maximum.

The is event would NOT be publicized in the media -- only to the membership of the BHPA.

If necessary, a list of names of those in attendance could be supplied.

In additional, the group requests permission to use the second floor conference room after the tour for a private program to view the Sanborn Insurance Maps which are available on CD ROM.  (See Handout).  We would make arrangements with HunTel.net and HunTel HR department to borrow a laptop and data projector to view the maps.

The tour would last about 20 minutes, the program would last one hour.

We would request that the tour is supervised (and maybe conducted by) a member of the building's management staff.  We also request the assistants and supervision of Ryan Thompson for the program and the exit process.
