The history of Blair is rooted in the coming of the Railroad.
Our city is located in this valley because this was the spot the
railroad selected to lay their line to Fremont - through the
gentle grade --through valley west of town --- up onto the bluffs of the
west bank of the wander Missouri River.
Our guest tonight knows the history of how and why the railroads
established their lines and platted our city.
Mr.
Lou Schmitz is the fore-most authority in this history of the railroads
in this area.
He is a native Omahan.
He was served our county in the last days of World World II, being
captured and imprisoned in Germany.
He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad 39 1/2 years.
And has had an intrestes in railroad for the past 60 years
He has amassed an extensive archive maps, original photographs and other
railroad documents.
In 1997, his history of the railroad in Blair was published in an
article in the North Western Lines Magazine -- documenting Blair's place
in railroad history.
