Local Candidates for National Registry of Historic Places

Project:  The BHPA could develop a list of list properties in Blair that show high prospects of being included in the National Registry of Historic Places.  This list should be prioritized and research conducted on the properties to provided background information for evaluation. A dialog with each property owner should be opened to discuss the possibly of inclusion on the registry.

Misconceptions:  There are a number of  issues about the National Registry that make some property owners leery of participating in the program. First, many people believe that the registry will restrict them in what they can or cannot do to their property. This is not true.  Some communities have local restrictions on historical properties and use the National Registry as a cretin for these restrictions.  But in Blair or in the State of Nebraska, there are no such restrictions.  The only exception is when properties received grant monies or tax incentives from certain sources.

The a property on the National Registry should not be confused with a National Historic Landmark, with is a ______ designation when a much higher degree of [prestige-clout].

five properties in Blair are already listed.

Tasks: Identify properties that might be in danger. Develop talking points describing the dangers.  Discuss this list with the properties owners and obtain permission to make their listing public.  Promote this list to the public on the website, at speaking engagements and the media.
