Landmarks Brochure (Seven Wonders of Blair)
BHAP Advisory Board. (Round Table Commission) -- Made up of interested, prominent city leaders. Meeting only ONE TIME per year with Board. Maybe a dinner meeting. Main purpose is to ask for advise on our direction, projects, etc. They would be GREAT community advocates and a way to get some heavy hitters involved in our group. They would review our annual report before the meeting. They will not want to invest much time -- they just want the "Honor" position and the opportunity to throw around ideas (and hopefully money.)

Forgotten Cobblestone Streets
New York City
still retains many of its bricked and cobblestoned streets, many of which date back to early in the twentieth Century, when horses and carriages ruled the streets instead of automobiles

Fence line Artifact

by Sherry Wiggins / Buster Simpson
“Fence line Artifact” intersects the DIA landscape with the memory of its recent history. The materials used to establish this 1,000-foot linear gesture include installed fence, fossil rocks from the excavation of the site, native cottonwood trees and historic artifacts. These artifacts are primarily agricultural implements collected and purchased from farmers who were relocated by the building of the airport. Porcelain enamel signs contain maps of the farmsteads, and birdhouses architecturally replicate some of the farmhouses that once existed at the site.

Plattsmouth High School
Published Thursday  December 30, 2004  WORLD-HERALD

An investment group headed by Beryle Johnston, a retired La Vista resident, bought the building in 2002 but did not secure a multimillion-dollar bank loan to renovate the building into a 30-unit apartment complex, as envisioned.

This month, the investors obtained a demolition permit. The permit called for razing to commence once the first snowfall arrived.   How was a demolition permit obtained?

The mild weather gave city historic preservationists several weeks to find a last-minute buyer.    What did the preservationists do to find a buyer?

Wolkins, a Tabor, Iowa, native, said he entered negotiations with city leaders about two weeks ago. He is developing the Raven's Nest subdivision at 96th and Bay Road, about 1.5 miles east of Cedar Creek, Neb. About a dozen homes are occupied. Plans call for 57 lots on 254 acres.

"Oh, what a shame it would have been to lose it," said Beverly Hirz, a 1956 graduate and a City Planning Commission member. "This is wonderful. I was hoping somebody would come forward. Why not make it into a travel lodge or bed and breakfast?"
Wolkins, 67, said he will probably conduct a feasibility study to determine the best use for the old school. Some city leaders agree with Hirz that a hotel would be welcome.

Everyday, irreplaceable historic resources in Idaho are permanently lost as a result of neglect, demolition, drastic renovation or encroaching development. In an effort to unify preservation efforts across the state, and to ensure the protected longevity of these cultural elements that we hold so dear, Preservation Idaho, the Idaho Historic Preservation Council has developed the Idaho’s 10 Most Endangered Historic Sites list. Properties successfully admitted to the list will include both buildings and sites that are currently being threatened in any of the above ways.

These properties will be the focus of an aggressive campaign to solicit public support and funding for saving the building. In addition to promotional materials, they will be included on a web page on the Preservation Idaho web site, which will also be linked from the National Trust for Historic Preservation web site -- drawing both local and national attention to the effort to preserve the sites.

Notes from a visit to Washington County Historical Association  Feb. 1, 2003

The 1908 Plat book was reproduced in a large format photocopy bound book by the Washington County Historical Association Women's Guild in 2002.  A copy of it is available at the WCHA library. The library also has 5-8 original 1908 Plat books -- none are which are in good condition.

There are at least two or three 1920 Plat books in the library

There are at least two 1894 plat books in the library.

In a 1960's (black place bound) plat book there was a photo a reference to a cheese factory.

"Old Blair cheese factory built in 1886.  Was operated in the 1880's by Henry Kaiser, Wm. Frost, Chas. Delo, Diram Conover, Niels Christiansen, & J.H. Hungate.  Purchased in 1877 by John Hansen who made it into a barn.  Located on the Clarence W. Hansen farm.

There are a number of scrape books with photos and news clipping about civic improvements and quality of live in Blair.

1/15/03 -- Ann George located cassette audio tapes by Niel Johnson in the Dana College archive. Some are interviews related to Dana (Bansen, the Nyholms, etc.), but others are labeled "local history."  This latter group includes interviews with Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Lundt, Pierce Allen (Niel identifies him as a resident of Ft. Calhoun), Al Sick, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Guyer, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lippincott, Edith Neale (also Ft. Calhoun), Seymour Smith, Marcus Beck, Clem Vig, and Roy Brown.

Notes from Ann George  11/3/02
Dorothy Wright asked this morning in the Archive whether the "Dexterville houses" were on the list. Those must be along Nebraska? She talked about their colorful paint jobs.

I also had lunch with Sharon Jensen and others and had a chance to ask Sharon on our way back to the library about their house and whether she'd like to have it on the list. She said yes. Their house was built in the 1890s, she said, and still has many of its original interior features (although the exterior was originally wood, it was soon stuccoed). Sharon said that at one time a chiropractor lived in it and had his practice there as well. Apparently he also delivered babies, because someone once told Tim and Sharon that he had been delivered in that house.

Sharon Jensen, by the way, says that they have an old photo of their house as well.  Ann
